María was the lover of Miguel "El M2" Fernandez a prominent member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) founded in 2007.
After giving up her regular life in 2017 to be with Miguel an already established member of the cartel she became part of CJNG with him and steadily gained in rank.
Enjoying her time as a cartel Kingpin she would regularly post her lavish criminal lifestyle online, Instagram was one of her favoured platforms to show off the things she had accumulated such as guns, designer clothing, and beautiful properties.
But all of this doesn't come for free or come easy and is short lived if you don't stay on top, something Maria would be finding out soon enough.
At the height of her time as a front woman she was put in charge of paying fellow criminals, and lead on assassinations, extortion and kidnappings.
Part of this role meant she had to make decisions, some went as planned others had more serious repercussions.
The current Boss of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel is Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes aka El Mencho previously part of the Sinaloa Cartel led by Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.
El Mencho is a ruthless man currently involved in an array of criminal behaviours such as 'huachicoleo' the illegal tapping of oil, Drug Trafficking and Murders to name just a few.
This has resulted in turf wars between the CJNG and rival Cartels such as the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel dating back to December 2017 leaving hundreds of police and civilians dead and thousands injured.
Making this new Generation Cartel currently one of the most dangerous in Mexico and a high priority on the polices radar.
One of Marias assigned roles was to organise things such as assassinations, the planning and execution was down to her instruction.
Maria was part of an organised ambush on state Police on October 14th 2019 in the municipality of Aguililla in Michoacan State, leaving 14 police dead and 9 injured. This is what would ultimately be the first stages of her downfall.
As a result of this ambush her and other Cartel members were hiding out in a discrete location to avoid capture from armed forces.
On the 10th of January 2020 the military received Intel confirming the location of Marias hideout, they stormed the location and opened fire.
Maria and other members shot back, during the reign of gunfire Maria was shot in the neck and quickly deteriorated.
She is recorded shortly after being shot on a military body cam clearly seen with injuries to her neck, then later being carried to the helicopter to get medical assistance.
She died a few minutes after the helicopter took off, it was suspected that El M2 was also arrested and detained on scene.
National Guard officers also reportedly arrested several cartel colleagues identified as Alejandra, Everardo, Brayan, Juan Carlos, Octavio, Pedro, and Alejandro.
They also seized 10 firearms with ammunition and seized several vehicles during a later raid, according to reports.
